Simply a document viewer

Evince is a document viewer for multiple document formats. The goal of evince is to replace the multiple document viewers that exist on the GNOME Desktop with a single simple application.

Evince is specifically designed to support the file following formats: PDF, Postscript, djvu, tiff, dvi, XPS, SyncTex support with gedit, comics books (cbr,cbz,cb7 and cbt). For a comprehensive list of formats supported.

Supported Document Formats

Evince can support many different multiple and single page document formats. Here is the current list of supported formats.

Built-in Support

PDF using the Poppler backend

Postscript using the libspectre backend

Multi-Page TIFF

DjVu using the DjVuLibre backend

Optional Support

Possible or Planned to Support

MS Powerpoint using libpreview. Currently very rough and alpha-quality.

What about the following? They are probably the most important formats “a document viewer” really should support, however this does not seem to be the plan according to this mail to desktop-devel

MS Word

OpenOffice.org OpenDocument and other formats

Animated image files would also be nice. I don’t think they are supported via gtkpixbuf. MatthiasClasen: Yes, they are. Check out GdkPixbufAnimation

We at AppsForMyPC have tested and used Evince and it worked pretty smoothly 🙂 🙂
